Can AI Write Your Resume? What Works and What to Check
By the dotresume team ยท
Yes, AI can write a resume, in the sense that it can produce a page that looks like one in seconds. Whether that page gets you interviews depends on what you feed it and how carefully you check what comes back. Used well, AI is an excellent editor. Used as a ghostwriter with no input, it produces confident, generic text that any recruiter has read a thousand times.
What AI does well
- Turning notes into bullets. Give it a messy description of what you did and it will produce clean, parallel bullet points with strong verbs.
- Tightening. It's good at cutting a three-line bullet to one line without losing the point, and at removing filler like "responsible for" and "helped with".
- Structure. It can suggest a sensible section order for your situation: education first for a new grad, licenses first for a nurse, skills grouped for an engineer.
- Consistency. Tense, punctuation, date formats, and capitalization are tedious for people and trivial for AI.
- Tailoring. Given a job description, it can point out which of your experiences match and suggest reordering. See tailoring a resume with ChatGPT.
Where AI goes wrong
- It invents numbers. Ask for "more impactful bullets" and you may get "increased revenue by 35%" when you never said that. This is the single most dangerous failure, because you'll be asked about it in an interview.
- It writes generic text. "Results-driven professional with a passion for excellence" fits everyone and says nothing. AI drifts toward this phrasing unless you give it specifics.
- It inflates. "Helped with the migration" can become "Led the migration". Interviewers probe exactly these claims.
- It loses your voice. Every bullet starting with "Spearheaded" or "Leveraged" reads as machine-written to an experienced reader.
- It can't see the page. A chat assistant doesn't know your bullet now wraps onto a second line, or that your resume spilled onto page two.
The input decides the output
The quality of an AI-written resume is mostly determined before you press enter. Give it:
- Facts, not adjectives. What you built, sold, fixed, or ran; for whom; how big; what changed.
- Your real numbers. Team size, budget, users, revenue, time saved. If you don't have a number, say so and ask it not to invent one.
- The target role. A job description, or at least the title and level.
- Constraints. One page, one line per bullet, no invented metrics, keep my wording where possible.
A good prompt looks like: "Rewrite these notes as 3 resume bullets for a senior product manager role. Use only the facts and numbers I gave you. Start each with a specific verb. Keep each under 110 characters."
A review checklist before you send
Read every line the AI touched and ask:
- Is it true? Could you tell a two-minute story about it in an interview?
- Is every number mine? Delete any figure you didn't supply.
- Is the verb honest? "Led" means you led it. "Built" means you built it.
- Is it specific? If a bullet could appear on anyone's resume, rewrite it with a detail only you would know.
- Does it sound like me? Swap repeated buzzwords for plain language.
- Does it fit? Check the actual PDF for page count and lines that wrap with one or two words on their own line.
AI for each stage of your career
- New grads: AI is great at turning class projects and part-time jobs into professional bullets. Start from the new grad example and our guide to a resume with no experience.
- Mid-career: use AI to cut. Most experienced resumes are too long; ask it to keep the three strongest bullets per role.
- Career changers: ask AI to translate your old field's language into the new one's. See resumes for a career change.
Let the AI see the result
The weakness of chat-based resume writing is the copy-paste loop: you paste text in, paste text back, fix the formatting, and hope it still fits. A better setup lets the AI edit your actual resume and see how it renders.
dotresume works that way. Your resume is structured data with a fixed template, so an AI agent can change the content without breaking the layout. Through the agent API, the agent gets a layout report after every edit: page count, plus any lines where a few words dangle onto their own line. You stay in control of the facts, and the PDF you download is exactly what you previewed. It's totally free, with no account required.
The verdict
AI can write a solid first draft and an excellent second draft. It can't know what you actually did, and it can't be held accountable in an interview. Give it real facts, forbid invented numbers, and review every line. Then it's the best resume editor you've ever had.
